The Center for International Earth Science Information Network is a center within the Earth Institute at Columbia University. CIESIN works at the intersection of the social, natural, and information sciences, and specializes in on-line data and information management, spatial data integration and training, and interdisciplinary research related to human interactions in the environment. CIESIN's mission is to provide access to and enhance the use of information worldwide, advancing understanding of human interactions in the environment and serving the needs of science and public and private decision making.
The International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme is an international scientific research programme built on interdisciplinarity, networking and integration. IGBP’s mission is to deliver scientific knowledge to help human societies develop in harmony with Earth’s environment. IGBP's scientific objective is to describe and understand the interactive physical, chemical and biological processes that regulate the total Earth System, the unique environment that it provides for life, the changes that are occurring in this system, and the manner in which they are influenced by human actions.
The International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change is an international, interdisciplinary and non-governmental research programme, sponsored by the International Social Science Council and the International Council for Science. IHDP's aims are to describe, analyse and understand the human dimensions of global environmental change through the development and integration of research on the human dimensions of global environmental change. IHDP's programme is designed around its three main objectives of research, capacity building and networking.
The National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy is an independent advisory body that provides decision makers, opinion leaders and the Canadian public with advice and recommendations for promoting sustainable development. Legislated by an Act of Parliament in 1994, NRTEE has members appointed by the Prime Minister of Canada, representing a broad range of sectors, including business, labour, academia, environmental organizations and Aboriginal groups. NRTEE Works with stakeholders across Canada to identify key issues with both environmental and economic implications, examines these implications and suggests how to balance economic prosperity with environmental preservation.
