Just another example of why we need to think critically and dig a little deeper to really understand the implications of science:
A 2006 study suggested that plants could account for almost half of the global production of [methane].
But a UK-based team now reports that under normal conditions, plants just convey methane from the soil to the air without actually producing it.
Scientists were surprised by the 2006 findings, because "it just didn't make sense". So they set up their own experiments growing plants in media that contained no organic material, and found the plants produced no methane. Science is an art. Sometimes, if you don't follow your instincts, you will miss the deeper story.
