OK, he's not going to save the world, but if one guy in a garage can modify a standard 5,000-pound vehicle using standard parts so that it gets 60 miles to the gallon and does zero to 60 mph in five seconds, you have to wonder why the big auto manufacturers aren't doing it. In fact, with clients like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Neil Young, Johnathan Goodwin has got Detroit thinking.
One of America's challenges in weaning itself off fossil fuels is lack of alternative fuels. So Goodwin figures the US of A should switch to diesel engines as a first step, since that will make it easier to gradually increase the proportion of biofuels without modifying engines; then produce diesel-electric hybrids; and finally produce electric hybrids that run in "dual fuel" mode, burning biodiesel along with hydrogen, ethanol, natural gas, or propane.
