What to do if you have 450 million bicycles and 4.21 million hectares of bamboo? Build bamboo bicycles, of course! Although these ones aren't being made in China - they come from Portland, Oregon and cost around $1,250 - as Erica Schlaikjer suggests, it would seem to be a perfect Chinese industry.

That's what I thought, too--a perfect solution for China! But I received a response from the founder of Portland, Ore.-based Daedalus Cycles, and he said it would be too expensive to mass-produce bamboo bikes...Might not be such a sustainable solution afterall. But definitely a neat idea!
